Canon Envirothon 2010 Diversity Enhancement and Underserved Audience Grant Recipients

Recommended for funding:
Alberta Envirothon – $2,000*
Project: To promote and facilitate regional competitions to enable teachers and students in underserved regions of Alberta to participate in Envirothon.
Connecticut Envirothon - $2,000
Project: Funding will enable CT Envirothon to continue to reach out to underserved inner city schools which have no resources for extra curricular activities. Since offering transportation, provided using past Diversity Grant Program funds, the CT Envirothon has gone from one to seven inner city schools signed up for the 2009 – 2010 Envirothon program.
Louisiana Envirothon - $1,500
Project: To encourage participation of disadvantaged student teams by providing team registration scholarship for those without ability to pay registration fees and meals at training session. The project will provide additional training sessions to prospective teams unable to travel to a training session or need additional education on a specific test topic.
Maryland Envirothon - $2,000
Project: To provide environmental education to high school students from Baltimore City, the 20th largest city in the United States. The MD Envirothon Committee proposed to use the project funds for outreach, instruction and transportation.
Mississippi Envirothon - $2,000
Project: To increase minority participation in the Mississippi Envirothon through enhanced training and efforts and by providing travel expenses to teams who would not otherwise be able to participate.
New Brunswick Envirothon - $2,000
Project: The Envirothon New Brunswick Francophone School Outreach project will concentrate on addressing the Provincial language requirements to promote and facilitate Envirothon within the public school system.
Newfoundland and Labrador Envirothon - $2,000
Project: Promote the NL Envirothon program in remote areas of the province through the involvement of a team from Menihek High School in Labrador City at the provincial Envirothon competition.
New York Envirothon - $2,000*
Project: To increase participation of rural schools in the Envirothon program in New York State by 2 percent in 2011 by increasing awareness in providing presentation and resource materials.
Nova Scotia Envirothon - $2,000
Project: To promote and continue the Envirothon program among Nova Scotia’s Aboriginal Youth. Through the program, participating students have come to look at “the power of a high school diploma” in a more positive way.
Ontario Envirothon - $1,000*
Project: Encouraging French speaking youth to join the Envirothon program.
Currently there are 12 French language schools competing in the Francophone Envirothon.
Saskatchewan Envirothon - $2,000
Project: Helping to increase participation of Saskatchewan’s northern First Nation communities. Grant will be used to help offset travel to and from
April training workshop, offset registration fees and substitute teacher costs if required.
Texas Envirothon - $2,000
Project: The Environmental Institute of Houston will recruit at least two new and retain at leave five underserved/diverse schools to participate in the 2010 Texas State Envirothon.
Virginia Envirothon - $3,225
Project: Funding will provide the VA Envirothon program with the ability to provide the teacher and students with a number of resources which may not have been possible due to budget restrictions and availability of resources. Curriculum materials will be made available to prepare new coaches and students.
